Reflecting critically

Module Reflection

This module has been an insightful stepping stone in helping me regain my academic momentum. After spending two years in the navy speaking to regulars who could barely form sentences, returning to a structured learning environment made me quickly realize how out of practice I had become with essential academic skills like essay writing and formal communication. This module helped reintroduce me to these skills and gave me the tools and time to sharpen them.

At the start of the module, I set a personal goal to improve my presentation and public speaking skills. I’ve always preferred clear and direct communication, but I knew I needed to become more comfortable presenting in front of an audience. The opportunities to present throughout the module helped me rebuild confidence, improve my delivery, and become more aware of how to engage listeners effectively.

Another important aspect of the module was the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. Working in groups allowed me to interact with classmates from different backgrounds and perspectives. It also helped me develop interpersonal skills like active listening and adapting my communication style to different team dynamics. These group tasks reinforced the importance of shared responsibility and mutual respect in achieving common goals.

Being part of a team also made me more reflective about my contributions and how I could support others. I learned that effective teamwork involves open communication, flexibility, and encouragement. These experiences reminded me of my time in the navy but in a more academic context.

Overall, this module helped me refine both individual and collaborative communication skills. From writing and presenting to group work and peer feedback, I now feel better prepared for future academic challenges and more confident in contributing to both academic and professional team environments.

Technical Report Reflection

Working on the technical report was a good experience, mainly thanks to my teammates. I genuinely believe that, despite the many landmines in this class, I landed on gold with the group I was placed in. We were able to work together smoothly, dividing the workload fairly and respecting each other’s strengths. Each of us brought something different to the table, whether it was research, writing, editing or formatting.

What stood out the most during the process was whenever we faced the challenge of managing our time. During the report period, we had a lot of other assignments from other modules due. As a result, we had to prioritize those deadlines first and ended up rushing parts of the report. While this stressed us out near the end, we made the most of our time by communicating openly and dividing the remaining task in a way that played to each member's strengths. Thanks to that, we were able to complete the report to a standard that we are proud of.

On a personal level, this report helped me improve my research and referencing skills. Before this project, I was not very confident in using APA 7th edition citation properly. However, through writing this report and reviewing various sources, I learned how to cite both in-text and in the reference list with greater accuracy and consistency.

Overall, this experience was like an onion layered with stress, learning, and growth. And just like Shrek, I walked out of the swamp a little wiser, a little tougher, and definitely more prepared for the adventures ahead.

The automation also helps prevent common calibration-related issues such as uneven first layers or failed prints, making the printing process smoother and more predictable. In professional settings, this level of automation saves time and allows users to focus on design and production rather than troubleshooting setup issues.

Supporting idea#2: High speed printing with consistent quality

Speed is another area where the A1 Mini excels. While many budget 3D printers prioritize affordability over performance, the A1 Mini offers an impressive balance by delivering high-speed printing without sacrificing quality. The printer utilizes advanced motion control algorithms to optimize speed and stability, enabling it to print faster than many competitors in its price range. This efficiency makes it particularly useful for users who need to produce multiple prototypes or parts in a short amount of time.

Despite its speed, the A1 Mini maintains a high level of print accuracy and detail, ensuring consistent results even with complex designs. Many entry-level printers struggle with layer shifts, inconsistent extrusion, or artifacts caused by rapid movements, but the A1 Mini mitigates these issues through its precise engineering. This makes it a great option for engineering students, hobbyists, and professionals who require reliable output without the frustration of reprinting failed models.

Supporting idea#3: Compact size and low maintenance requirements make it ideal for small workplaces/mass production use via multiple printers

The A1 Mini’s compact design is well-suited for environments where space is a limiting factor, such as small workshops, classrooms, and home offices. With a build volume of 180 x 180 x 180 mm, it fits neatly into tight spaces while still being large enough for most everyday 3D printing projects. Unlike larger printers that require dedicated workspaces, the A1 Mini can be conveniently placed on a desk or shelf without causing clutter.

Additionally, its low maintenance requirements contribute to its practicality. The automated calibration system, combined with its well-designed extruder and robust frame, reduces the need for frequent manual tuning or part replacements. Since the printers require minimal manual oversight, they can be operated in a networked environment, making them a viable option for batch manufacturing, rapid prototyping, or educational labs that need multiple machines running in parallel.

Counterargument: Limited build volume restricts larger project builds & comparison to similarly priced printers

While the Bambu Lab A1 Mini offers numerous advantages in terms of ease of use, speed, and compact design, its 180 x 180 x 180 mm build volume may be a limiting factor for users who require larger prints. This constraint makes it less suitable for projects that involve bigger components or intricate multi-part assemblies that would be more efficiently printed in a single run. Users working on functional prototypes, cosplay props, or large engineering models may find themselves needing to split their designs into multiple sections, which can introduce additional challenges in terms of structural integrity and post-processing.

Additionally, when compared to similarly priced printers on the market, some alternatives offer larger build volumes, such as the Creality Ender 3 series, which provides a 220 x 220 x 250 mm print area. While the Ender 3 lacks some of the A1 Mini’s automated features and ease of use, its larger capacity makes it a preferable option for users who prioritize build size over automation.

Despite this drawback, the A1 Mini compensates with its superior user experience, requiring significantly less manual calibration and maintenance compared to competitors. For users who prioritize convenience and reliability over raw print size, the A1 Mini remains a strong choice, though those who need to print larger objects in one go may find themselves exploring alternatives.

Conclusion:

Self Introduction Letter

 Dear Professor Blackstone,

My name is Benjamin, and I previously studied Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Polytechnic before transitioning to Civil Engineering here at SIT. My decision to pursue a career in engineering stems from a long-standing interest in problem-solving and hands-on tinkering, which have always been passions of mine.

One of my strengths is my ability to communicate with clarity and conciseness. I believe in getting straight to the point, which enables me to convey ideas effectively and avoid unnecessary ambiguity. That said, I recognise that this can sometimes come across as abrupt or blunt, and I am actively working to strike a balance to ensure my communication is both effective and empathetic.

What sets me apart is that I am dyslexic. While this posed challenges during my early years, it has also shaped my resilience and taught me to approach learning and problem-solving in creative ways. Over time, I’ve developed strategies to manage it effectively, and it now offers me a unique perspective that I bring to my work and interactions.

For this module, my primary goal is to enhance my presentation and public speaking skills. I am eager to learn techniques that will help me communicate more effectively in front of an audience and present my ideas with confidence.

Sincerely,
Benjamin

Week 1 discussion

"Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can't get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn't even matter."

Gilbert Amelio, former President and CEO of National Semiconductor Corp

John agrees with the statement as he’s had experience with a group leader that was unable to communicate effectively thus slowing down the rate of progress at which his project could progress.

I agree with the statement, as I believe communication is key for a team to complete any work. If a team leader does not properly convey what is expected of the team for a project, the members will not be able to work together effectively.
